How AncestryScan Works

AncestryScan uses a 5-stage AI analysis pipeline to estimate heritage from a single photograph:

1.Feature Extraction — Identifies and measures 24+ facial characteristics including bone structure, nose shape, eye shape, lip fullness, skin undertone, and hair texture.
2.Candidate Selection — Matches extracted features against a database of 207 phenotypes spanning 16 geographic regions.
3.Visual Comparison — Performs parallel visual comparison against reference phenotype images.
4.Feature Scoring — Scores each facial feature against candidate phenotypes for statistical match confidence.
5.Final Synthesis — Generates a complete heritage narrative with regional percentages and cultural context.

Privacy & Data Handling

AncestryScan is designed with privacy as a core principle. Photos are processed in real-time and deleted immediately after analysis — no facial images are stored on any server.

Analysis results are stored locally on the user's device only. The app does not collect biometric identifiers and is compliant with BIPA (Illinois), GDPR (EU), CCPA (California), and additional US state privacy laws.

Face detection and validation happens on-device before any data is sent for processing, ensuring invalid or non-face images never leave the user's phone.
