Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about AncestryScan — how it works, privacy, pricing, and more.

About AncestryScan

What is AncestryScan?
AncestryScan is an AI-powered iOS app that analyzes facial features to estimate your ancestral origins. It maps 24+ facial features against 207 global phenotypes across 16 geographic regions to produce a detailed ancestry breakdown — no DNA required.
How does AncestryScan work?
AncestryScan uses a 5-stage AI pipeline to process your photo. It detects your face, extracts 24+ biometric features, compares them against a library of 207 global phenotypes spanning 16 geographic regions, and returns a detailed ancestry estimate — all in under 60 seconds.
How accurate is AncestryScan compared to DNA tests?
AncestryScan provides visual ancestry estimates based on phenotypic traits — the physical features shaped by your genetics. While DNA tests sequence your actual genome, AncestryScan uses AI pattern recognition to infer likely heritage from appearance. Results are estimates and can be a fun complement to DNA testing, but they are not a replacement for a clinical DNA test.
Is AncestryScan a DNA test?
No. AncestryScan is not a DNA test. It analyzes facial features using computer vision and AI to estimate ancestry — no biological sample is required. For a definitive genetic ancestry report, consider pairing AncestryScan with a DNA testing service.
What facial features does AncestryScan analyze?
AncestryScan examines 24+ distinct facial features including bone structure, facial proportions, skin tone distribution, eye shape and spacing, nose morphology, lip shape, jawline geometry, and more. These features are cross-referenced against 207 global phenotype profiles to generate your ancestry estimate.

Privacy & Security

Is my photo stored after analysis?
No. AncestryScan has a strict zero data retention policy. Your photo is transmitted securely to our servers for analysis and is deleted immediately after your results are generated. We never store, share, or sell your images.
What data does AncestryScan collect?
AncestryScan collects only the minimum data necessary to provide the service: an anonymous account identifier, your scan credits, and aggregate usage metrics for app improvement. We do not collect your name, email address, or any photo data beyond the moment of analysis. All analytics are privacy-safe and do not include personally identifiable information.
Is AncestryScan GDPR and CCPA compliant?
Yes. AncestryScan is compliant with GDPR, CCPA, and BIPA (Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act). Our zero data retention policy means photos are deleted immediately after analysis, and we do not build biometric profiles or sell user data to third parties. For details, see our Privacy Policy.

Pricing

How much does AncestryScan cost?
AncestryScan is free to download and includes one free scan so you can try it before purchasing. Additional scans are available as in-app purchases: $2.99 for a single scan, $9.99 for 5 scans, or $14.99 for 10 scans. Credits never expire.
Is there a subscription?
No. AncestryScan uses a simple pay-per-scan credit model with no recurring subscription. You buy credits when you need them and they never expire. There are no hidden fees or automatic renewals.

Pet Breed Identification

Can AncestryScan identify dog breeds?
Yes. AncestryScan can analyze a photo of your dog and identify the likely breed or breed mix. The AI examines physical characteristics including coat texture, body proportions, ear shape, snout length, and facial structure to match against a comprehensive breed database.
Can AncestryScan identify cat breeds?
Yes. AncestryScan supports cat breed identification in addition to dogs. Take a clear photo of your cat and the AI will analyze its features to identify the probable breed or breed combination.
How accurate is the pet breed identification?
Pet breed identification works best with clear, well-lit photos where the animal's face and body are fully visible. Accuracy is highest for purebred animals and common mixed breeds. Results are estimates based on visual traits and are provided for fun and informational purposes — they are not a substitute for official breed certification or veterinary evaluation.
